On Friday September 3rd 2010, Venki Ramakrishnan gave a Partnership for Structural Biology seminar at ILL.
The 2009 Nobel prize winner had accepted the invitation before the prize was announced. The Chadwick lecture theatre was overflowing with scientists and students who had come from all over Grenoble. They were treated to an exceptionally vivid presentation of the background and early work that led to the high resolution structure of the ribosome, the molecular machine that translates the genetic message to manufacture proteins in all cells.
Venki Ramakrishnan acknowledged the important role of ESRF in this work and showed us how his research now continues towards unravelling the intricate mechanisms of protein synthesis, which are fundamental to all living life forms.
